Home Alone essays In 1990, the hit comedy Home Alone was released on video. This movie is a nasty, evil, and sadistic motion picture. In the same respect, I think it is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. For those of you who do not remember this film, it was about the McAllister familys vacation and somehow Macaulay Culkin (Kevin) was mistakenly left home alone. Meanwhile that same morning Kevin believes that somehow his wish has finally come true; hes finally rid of his family! He can jump on the beds, watch R-rated movies, eat gobs of ice cream and potato chips, and look through his older brothers stuff. Kevin also has to deal with the scary furnace in the cellar which appears to be a monster, the old man next door who is a snow-shoveling murderer, and lastly the two crooks who try to break into his house. This movie closely parallels what Ever since I was a little girl my parents have always told me not to talk to strangers, open the door, or answer the phone. When my family moved into a small culdesac development my parents reinforced those guidelines. I lived in my new house about a year prior to the attempted break-in. There are only fifteen houses in my development, and the majority of the families that live in these houses are retired. Most people would think my neighborhood is a relatively crime free place. It was the summer of fourth grade. I was nine years old, going on sixteen. I thought I was so mature and could take care of myself. So when my mother had to leave for a business meeting and would only be gone for an hour, I jumped at the opportunity to stay home by myself. Little did I know that this would be one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. The nightmare began about twenty minutes after my mom left for her business meeting. I’ve always loved to do hair and make-up, I like to do a lot of experiments and that’s why cosmetology is so interesting to me. These past couple weeks I’ve learned so much about cosmetology. I had the chance to meet so many talented people. I’ve also had the chance to go to places that are known for their awesome work. I’ve even experienced the life before becoming a cosmetologist. Its been a great life changing experience and I’ve learned so much from it. Make-up is one of my favorite things to do. I thought I knew so much about make-up but the truth is that I didn’t. There are so many things to learn about make-up. When I was at M. A. C Cosmetics in the Lehigh Valley Mall I learned so many new things. I even learned about what to do when the make-up is off your face. When a girl is using make up she should constantly be taking care of her face. She should be cleansing her face everyday twice a day, day and night. There are cleansers for different skin types. Milk or cream cleanser is for dry skin and a foam or gel cleanser is for oily skin. She should also tone her face, toners refresh, hydrate, and soften the skin. Toners should also be used twice a day everyday; after cleansing and before moisturizing. Moisturizing should also be done; oil free moisturizer is for oily skin and richly emollient cream is for dry skin. Moisturizer should have UVA and UVB protection. Exfoliating is also another thing to do after make-up is off the face. Exfoliating scrubs helps smooth the skins surface. Last but not least, masking; masking soothes the skin and draws out all of impurities that have been deep in skin. It should be applied at least once a week. Now the fun part is putting on the make-up. Its fun but it also has to be done right if you want to look good. When using make-up the right shade of foundation needs to be used. There are three types of shades; fair, medium, and dark. When in process of choosing the right shade the client should start with two or three different shades that are close to skin tone. Apply a little bit of each shade on the cheek and start blending each one. The one that seems to disappear is the right shade. To apply the foundation the right way a dot needs to be applied on the forehead, nose, and both cheeks. Start blending downward and outward with fingertips, make-up sponge, or foundation brush. The downward motion prevents build up of make-up under fine facial hairs. There also a lot of different foundation types. We have sheer which provides light, transparent coverage. There’s also medium coverage which provides semi-sheer coverage; and last we have full coverage which provides opaque color and a great finish. The eyes are always the attention grabber when it comes to make-up. The magic behind eye make-up is so cool. To begin with concealer is needed to even out the shades. Concealer is also good to keep eye make up from smeering. To apply concealer its needed to start at the bridge of nose, under the eyes, and on the eye lids. Concealer is applied with a concealer brush. Another good thing to do is to apply concealer on the trouble spots so that they are less noticeable. There are also many different concealer types. There’s cream to powder concealer which provides medium-full coverage and a creamy finish. Theres the liquid concealer with a sheer coverage and a light finish. Finally, there’s cream concealer which gives full coverage and a dewy finish. The powder is the next step. Powder is applied with a brush across the forehead and down the bridge of nose. The brush is used in downward motion along the sides of the face to avoid buildup under the fine facial hairs. Then there’s the blush which is like the same process but gives a nicer color. Blush is applied on the apple of the cheek and outward towards the hairline. There are also a lot of different blush types. We have the cream, the powder, and the liquid stains. The powder is good for oily skin, the cream is good for dry skin, and the liquid stains are good for all skin types. Shadow casting to me is the best part because all the colors are available and this where creativity comes to use. There are so many styles possible when it comes to shadow casting but they have to be done right. First, start by taking a large shadow brush and sweep light color over the whole lid; it brightens the area. Then use a medium to dark color on the crease; starting at the outter corner and working inward. It turns out to look beautiful. Then the eyeliner comes in to make the eyes pop out even more. There are so many different ones to use. There’s liquid, to crayon, to pencil, its just so great how there’s so much variety. The one that fits the face best is the one to choose. Then after the eyeliner comes the finishing touch which is mascara. It makes the eyes look so fabulous! The way to get the best curls is by using a lash curler before applying the mascara on the lashes. The lips always make a statement and the one that goes best with lips is the right one. If a girl has big luscious lips and she’s going for a casual look its not a good idea to use a bright vibrant color. She’s better off going with something light. If her lips are small she can use a bright color to make them a little more live. She can have gloss which provides a great shine. The sheer tints go more for a natural look. The mattes are more a flat and opaque finish. I’ve learned so much with this experience and I even got to interview a real make-up artist! Her name was Kim Clouser, she showed me so many things. She’s actually a make-up artist for Clinique. Kim actually didn’t got to school to learn to be a make-up artist she just learned through on-sight training. Kim loves her career as a make-up artist. When I asked her if she loved her career as a make up artist she clearly stated, †yes, nothing better than making a woman feel beautiful. † I felt so inspired when I was interviewing her because she seemed liked she really loved what she did. Kim actually decided she wanted to pursue this career when she was in her â€Å"teenage years†. In her opinion she says that â€Å"M. A. C Cosmetics† is the best make-up. At M. A. C you can find the best quality make-up to feel beautiful! I use it myself and it’s the best I’ve ever used. Through my experienced I’ve also learned a lot about hair. I love doing hair but not as much as doing make up, because with hair you really have to be careful with what is being done. With hair a hair stylist is working with chemicals and irons and she really has to be good at what she does. I got the chance to spend a little time at empire beauty school and at a salon. Through my experience I learned how to wash hair. Washing hair is actually cool because it feels good on the person you’re washing it. Professional shampoo and conditioner has to be used. The hair has to be washed at least three times and it needs a good treatment as well. Then afterwards the rollers should be put in the hair. Putting rollers in is actually pretty complicated. Its not as easy as it looks. The hair has to be parted in different sections and they have to be even. It must be done with a small comb. Then when the rollers are done the customer needs to be in the hair dryer for at least 45 minutes. Afterwards the hair needs to be blow dried. I love the blow drying part because that’s when the end results start showing up. Blow drying is tricky; the Hair Stylist needs to know how to hold the hair blower and the brush at the same time! She also needs to know how to move the brush and what type of brush to use depending on the length and type of hair she’s blow drying. After that’s done she gets to straighten or curl the hair depending on what style. If curling the hair she uses a curling iron. That’s the tricky one because she needs to know what curls to do and how to hold the iron. Straightening is the easiest part. With curling she needs to know how to do convex curls and concave curls. Convex curls give a lot of volume and it lifts the curls. Concave on the other hand creates a hollow flat design. My favorite ones are the convex curls they’re so full of volume! I also had the chance to interview a hairstylist her name was Alexandra Pontoski. When I asked her if she loved her career she shouted† I love my career!! †. She was â€Å"21† when she decided that doing hair was what she wanted to do. In her opinion â€Å"Sebastian† hair products are the best because â€Å"it’s the brand that she was trained with†. Alexandra went to â€Å"Metro Beauty School† to learn how to become a hair dresser. Alexandra really loves her career and she’s planning on staying in the field for a long time. My experience has been great! I’ve met wonderful people who are passionate about what they do. I am so grateful that I got to meet all of those wonderful people and that I learned so much from them and that I got the chance to hang with them for a little. They took they’re time and dedicated themselves to helping me with this project. I really didn’t like the hair part because its so complicated. The make-up was my favorite and I’ve always loved to do other girls make-up. Like Kim said â€Å" nothing better than making a woman feel beautiful† that’s how I see it too! To me this is a life changing experience its something that I can look back at and tell my children and grandchildren about. I got to live one of my dreams for a little.

Education Over Censorship Remember when you were a kid and you discovered something taboo or something that was considered adult? Didn’t it seem wrong, but exciting at the same time? It was something that was kept from your eyes or ears, but you were able to find it again when you wanted to. This is why there’s censorship in the world. There are things out there that children shouldn’t see. But determining what kids shouldn’t see has been plaguing our society forever. If we censor certain mediums just so kids can’t see them, then adults are also restricted. It’s like burning the house down to roast the pig. But, what if children were educated better? Even if they were educated about the taboo subjects such as pornography or obscenity, it could result in a society where these subjects weren’t taboo. Just blocking anything that has to do with sex, for example, could harm a child’s ability to learn important lessons about sex. If children are educated better, both at home and in school, censorship doesn’t have to be used and the idea of free speech could be respected much better than it is now. Unfortunately, when all those old dead presidents wrote the constitution over 200 years ago, they didn’t have TV, radio, or the internet. The fact that all the first amendment says is that congress can’t stop the freedom of speech or the press leaves this amendment open to endless debate over how it should be translated to modern day terms. If only Thomas Jefferson had in mind the KKK, Neo-Nazis, and the porn industry on the internet when he helped write the constitution. How Can Tax Cuts Help Revive the Economy

There are many opinions and predictions about how the economy will get back on track or how it will sink, and what should be the best approach of the government to take on this economic crisis. How important is the role of the government and how much a government should interfere in the economy? Introduction Unemployment has been one of the major concerns for many governments; historically unemployment reached 25% in the United States during the great depression in 1933. When there are no jobs people don’t have the money to spend, and demand for products decreases.When demand decreases many companies go out of business or just hire fewer workers, while unemployment keeps growing. The government has a very powerful tool called fiscal policy to manipulate the economy and control and manage the levels of demand. Fiscal Policy Fiscal policy is based on the theories of John Maynard Keynes also known as the Keynesian economics. The theory of Keynes state that the government can infl uence the economy by manipulating the increase or decrease of taxes and at the same time the level of government spending.By controlling the level of government spending what fiscal policy can do is to change the position of the Aggregated Demand curve (AD), since Government (G) is part of the aggregated demand. At the same time the government could cut taxes putting more money into the pockets of consumers called â€Å"disposable income†, which is another way of busting the Aggregated Demand since Consumers (C) is also part of the Aggregated Demand. The Multiplier EffectI think that there is a good question that we can formulate here: If government cut taxes and raises the level of government spending, how can the economy get better if by cutting taxes the government has less coming in, and at the same time by spending more the government is has more coming out? The multiplier effect states that when a part of the Aggregated Demand (C+I+G+(X-N) is changed, any of this compon ents which usually is (G), the result is an increase even greater than what was originally impacted by the changed and by doing this the government could push out the Aggregated Demand curve according to this rule.To explain the multiplier effect a little better let’s imagine that the government has 1 million dollars to spend, and it has several choices to do so, so let’s say that they decide to construct a new bridge. They hired 10 people who are now being paid and will spend part of that money each on another 10 more individuals. They spend 80% as disposable income and basic needs and save 20%. By spending 80% they are creating revenue for somebody else, who will use it as disposable money, at the same time by saving money they are creating more resources for a bank to e able to invest. At the end the initial money the government spent is not lost is only multiply and has created jobs, it has raised the level of demand, and it has boosted the (AD). The answer to the initial question: We can guess that the government expects to boost or better the economy by spending more, because eventually this spending will result into a greater impact into the economy by the consumers (C) Obstacles Reaching the GoalsFiscal Policies have some obstacles that can make the goals very hard to reach, and it could reverse the process and create inflation if these policies are not monitored constantly. The way this could happen is if too much money is injected into the economy while taxes are still down, and the consumer demands for goods and services are lower than the production supply. The increase in economic productivity can cross over a very fine line devaluating the real value of money and pushing the prices up, hence inflation occurs.At the same time the Multiplier effect can work in reverse because the success of the multiplier effect is based on the level of consumer spending. If the consumer doesn’t want to spend any money during difficult times th ere will be no money injected into the economy and the impact will be a decrease on the aggregated output. Conclusion The government plays a very important role in the economy, the decisions the government makes has a tremendous impact in the lives of its citizens.Making smart decisions in an economy that seems very volatile and probably unpredictable is very difficult. Movie : American History X Sociology Essay

In a shocking opening scene, teen Danny Vinyard who is played by Edward Furlong, races to tell his older brother, neo-Nazi Derek, about the young blacks breaking into his car in front of the house, whereupon Derek gets his gun and with no forethought shoots the youths in their tracks and he forces the other man to put his mouth on the curb, then brutally kills him by stomping on the back of his head, crushing his mouth against the curb. Danny watches in horror as this unfolds. The police arrest Derek as he smiles at a shocked Danny.. Derek having already been influenced by the latent racism of his bigoted firefighter father. Derek is driven to action when his father is shot and killed while fighting a fire in a suspected Compton drug den. Eventually Derek becomes second-in-command of a neo-Nazi street gang, The D.O.C. (Disciples of Christ), and entices young whites to join. Tried and convicted, Derek is sent away for three years in prison, where he acquires a different outlook as he contrasts white-power prisoners with black Lamont, his prison laundry co-worker and eventual pal. Flashbacks, told in reverse chronology and represented by black-and-white throughout the film which is opposed to the present-day events represented in color, Meanwhile, Danny, with a shaved head and a rebellious attitude, seems destined to follow in his big brother’s footsteps. After Danny writes a favorable review of Hitler’s Mein Kampf, black high-school principal Sweeney puts Danny in his private â€Å"American History X† course and assigns him to do a paper about his older brother, who was a former student of Sweeney’s. This serves to introduce flashbacks, with the film backtracking to illustrate Danny’s account of Derek’s life prior to the night of the shooting. Monochrome sequences of Derek leading a Venice, California gang are intercut with color footage of the mature Derek ending his past neo-Nazi associations and attempting to detour Danny away from the group led by white supremacist, Cameron, who once influenced Derek. At a neo-Nazi party which Derek and Danny are both attending (despite the fact that Derek told Danny not to attend), Derek confronts and tells the leader, Cameron Alexander, that he will no longer associate with him and the gang and tells him to â€Å"Stay away from me and Danny†, at which point Cameron provokes and insults Derek. Derek beats him up and finally, kicks him in the head, which knocks him unconscious before leaving his office. At school the next morning, after Danny uses the urinal in the bathroom, he is confronted by a young black student named Little Henry, with whom he had a confrontation the previous day. The student pulls out a gun and shoots Danny in the chest, killing him. When Derek arrives, he runs into the bathroom and tearfully cradles his dead brother in his arms. The ending credits are Derek saying one of Abraham Lincoln’s famous sayings, â€Å"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.†There are a few conflicts in the movie. One is that Derek between the neo-Nazi after he gets out. The term subculture refers to cultural patterns that set apart some segment of a society’s population. Cultural diversity also includes outright rejection of conventional ideas or behaviors. Counterculture refers to cultural patterns that strongly oppose those widely accepted within a society. In American History X it explores the neo-Nazi skinhead subculture in America. The skinheads are portrayed as hate-mongers; they believe in white supremacy and blame everyone else for their problems. The movie in a strong way, teaches that everyone deserves a second chance in life. Racism exists in many ways while American History X portrays one aspect of racism. The director portrays the neo-Nazi culture of America; their beliefs, reasons, and assumptions on others. American History X thoroughly exposes America as what it is today. Every day, crimes of hate are being committed mostly by blacks and whites. In the movie Derek’s father is portrayed as an ordinary working-class family man rather than a bigot to show that racism can stem from ignorance and the need to find a social  scapegoat. Shots of Derek staring attentively at his father then looking down and playing with his food show his confusion, and his final submission under his father’s demands for agreement â€Å"Yeah†¦I never thought about it like that.† The confusion shows that Derek is impressionable, and finally believes that social problems can be generalized to be blamed other races. The change that comes from this scene is shown in a news interview tape after Derek’s father is shot while fire-fighting in a black neighborhood. Derek’s growing hate forces his change in that moment from a timid, grieving son to an angry young man whose anger is given an outlet by the shadowy adult neo-Nazi, Cameron. In chapter three the author talks about norms which mean the rules and expectations by which a society guides the behaviors of its members. Mores are referred to norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance. People are more flexible about folkways. Folkways are norms for routine ad casual interaction. Examples include ideas about appropriate greetings, and proper dress. In the movie American History X there were a few morals that were shared between the members of this subculture. One of the main morals was that the white supremacy was better than the rest of the ethnicities. In one scene of the movie Danny says â€Å"I hate anyone that isn’t white Protestant.† Ethnocentrism is the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture. Some degree of ethnocentrism is necessary for people to be emotionally attached to their way of life. But Ethnocentrism also generates misunderstandings and sometimes conflicts. Cultural relativism is the practice of judging a culture by its own standards. Cultural relativism requires not only openness to unfamiliar values and norms but also the ability to put aside cultural standards we have known all our lives. Even so, as people of the world come into increasing contact with one another, the importance of understanding other cultures become ever greater. One person who is ethnocentric is Danny who judges other cultures mainly the black culture because he was raised around a neo-Nazi brother and father most of his life. Derek was ethnocentric but due to some circumstances he turned into cultural relativism because he was more open and more understanding since he came back from prison. He went to prison because of his actions as an ethnocentric. He came out a changed man because he got raped because he was a neo-Nazi and his cell mate was a black and he was the only one who helped him and before Derek was released his cell mate was murdered. The social message in this movie was that racism is still a big problem here in America. It might not really look like it but it still exists. The movie insights of the racist of our social world. It also shows the audience an insight of the ethnocentrism community.

After the war, back in the United States, Earl met a Thai woman named Kultida and he married her and had a son. They named the baby Eldrick, but Earl called him "Tiger". Tiger Woods took interest in golf at a young age. He would watch from his crib as his father would practice his swing. He began playing golf since before he could walk. When he got a few years older, he began to compete in the Junior Nationals tournaments against older boys. He didn't hav the strength to drive the ball far, but he had skill; he was blessed. Understanding Passive Vocabulary A passive vocabulary is made up of the words that an individual recognizes but rarely uses when speaking and writing. Also known as recognition vocabulary. Contrast with  active vocabulary.   According to John Reynolds and Patricia Acres, Your passive vocabulary is  likely to contain more words than the active one. One way to improve the range of the vocabulary in your own writing is to try to transfer words from your passive to the active vocabulary (Cambridge Checkpoint English Revision Guide, 2013). Examples and Observations A passive vocabulary . . . includes the words stored in verbal memory that people partially understand, but not well enough for active use. These are words that people meet less often and they may be low frequency words in the language as a whole. In other words, activating them takes longer and it demands greater stimulus than most textual contexts provide. Words stop being passive if people are regularly contracting relations that activate them, since this lowers the amount of stimulus needed to put them to use. A facility in using the words develops. Again constraints of another kind in the extralinguistic context may also restrict the active use of some words.
